Philip W. Guild, a geologist and authority on metallogenic maps and the genesis of ore deposits, received his Ph. D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1947. He was a career employee of the United States Geological Survey, beginning as a junior geologist in 1939. He did field investigations from 1939-1954 in the Western United States, Cuba, Guatemala, and Brazil.
